How to Protect Your Family in The Internet
Just going to talk about something called DNS
Most of humanity is connected through the internet. Newer generation consumes web content more than food. Of course, that’s not totally true.
You can be as liberal as it gets. You will find something that pisses you off. and don’t want your children if you have any to look at.
You want to protect them from those stuff?
Great! Let’s start with how this thing works.
Domain, IP and The DNS
Yep, we are not going to start with DARPA and those stories of how the internet started. We are going to rescue our children from this warzone and we don’t have much time.
- Domain: A readable name or address that helps us humans remember places in the internet for later exploration. It looks something like domain.ltd.
- IP: Stands for Internet Protocol. This protocol allows any of our devices to have its own address in this huge network. It has two version 4 and 6. It looks something like this 1.1.1.3 for version 4 or 2001:0000:130F:0000:0000:09C0:876A:130B for version 6.
- DNS: Domain Name Server. They are special machines with huge registries of matching a domain to an IP.
Who Owns DNS?
Anyone can own one. Your machine can has its own. However, for most people, they uses the one provided by their ISP (Internet Service Provider).
Great! Why should I care then?
Do you trust your ISP? Do they care about your children and their safety as you do?
The bitter answer is no! They care about your money. Most DNS providers do.
What Can I Do?
You have three choices:
- You either disconnect yourself and family from the internet. Which is impossible since the internet is treated as a right to have in some places.
- Use services that offers protection.
- Build your own solution.
We are going with the second choice. Since the first one is very hard to do and the last one requires some knowledge.
