I was a Moodle developer until recently, trying to break free from its limitations and work on different projects with new technologies. Recently, I got a chance to work on a Laravel project (for production and for fun).

I use Laravel from time to time and know a lot about its world. However, I never used it to ship something that had real traffic — it was just a dormant skill I had in the back of my head.
When I quit my job, I found out that I had to be more competent than ever to survive in this world. Dormant skills won’t help you at all — you have to call them forth and put them to work if you want to get paid.
So I negotiated with a client who wanted a Moodle plugin transformed into a Laravel application (a platform that integrates with Moodle), since his product is more than just a plugin.
We agreed, and I went with Laravel for the project, thinking I knew it all. Then, the Wave Starter Kit from Dojo released its new version — version 3. I was hyped; things were getting easy from the start. I informed him of my choice and began…
